A brief note on flies and equipment. We generally fish 8 or 9 weight rods equipped with a saltwater reel with a solid drag, at least 150 yds of backing and a WF line suitable for the tropics. Leaders range from 9-12 feet with tippets in the 12-to-16-pound range with many anglers favoring fluorocarbon. The fish are mostly unpressured and finding the fish is the main determinant of success. Generally, a well-presented fly within 50 feet is sufficient in most situations, although the ability to produce long accurate cast under windy conditions does result in larger fish counts at the end of the day. The fish are not terribly choosy in terms of flies, with a #2 to #6 Gotcha being the guides’ default. However, depth of presentation and a quiet landing sometimes do become a factor, so we do recommend carrying weighted and unweighted versions of a few standard bonefish flies.
